Oberwerth Little William (The SL Bag® Medium) - Field report
Introduction
The Signature series was launched in summer 2025. It is available in three sizes and - as of January 2026 - in two colors: Brown and black.
Before we go into detail, one thing is important to me: transparency.
Transparency & cooperation with Oberwerth
Oberwerth provided me with the Signature Bag L free of charge.
I received no fee, there were no content requirements and the article was not submitted for approval. As always, I write freely and independently.
I have been working with Oberwerth on a trusting basis for some time now and have already used and reviewed several of the brand's bags both here on the blog and on our YouTube channel. The team has always been open to feedback, criticism and suggestions for improvement.
This openness and tangible passion for their own products is something I really appreciate. Long-time readers will also know that I am also a convinced user of Billingham. Both manufacturers have exactly this in common: the aspiration to do less - but better.
I hope that the following experience report will help you if you are considering buying a bag from the Signature series.

Workmanship & materials - leather with character
Oberwerth traditionally makes no compromises when it comes to materials.
What strikes me about all Oberwerth leather products:
The more you use them, the more pleasant the leather feels. A little stiffer at first, it quickly becomes soft and grippy - a real hand flatterer.
I regularly catch myself stroking the leather while sitting at the gate or lost in thought on the train. When I realize this, I have to smile - and then stop before it looks strange. 😄
The leather of the Signature series seems even firmer at first than other Oberwerth bags. I'm honestly curious to see how long it will take before I find myself "stroking" it again, lost in thought.
Yes, it sounds funny - but it is. Guilty 😉
Oberwerth itself describes the leather as follows:
"Made from 100% vegetable-tanned premium leather from renowned Tuscan tanneries, it develops a noble patina over time. Free from harmful substances and manufactured without artificial coatings."
I will probably be providing updates on the subject of patina here in the future - a small personal patina project.
Seams, fittings and workmanship are - visibly and tangibly - of a very high standard.
Oberwerth bags are not mass-produced. Each bag is handmade in Germany. Made in Germany is not a marketing term here, but a tangible reality - with all its consequences, including in terms of price.
Design & Volume
At first glance, the design is typical of oberwerth: reduced, elegant, unobtrusive.
Nothing screams "camera bag".
Whether worn with a suit or jeans - the Signature Bag L works in both worlds. The LOXX fasteners are polarizing: Some love them, others less so. They take a little getting used to, but are then quick, secure and reliable - for me a crucial point in a photo bag.
The new lid design
Probably the most important design change is hidden in the lid.
While many Oberwerth bags use internal leather flaps that protect the sides from splashing water, the lid used to be flush with the outer edges.
This is different with the Signature Bag L:
The lid now encloses the bag and protects the interior much more effectively. I think this is a real improvement - both functionally and visually.
It also shows that Oberwerth listens and continues to develop without doing away with existing series. The Signature series is a deliberate alternative for users who prefer this design.
Carrying strap & ergonomics
The strap is not removable, but is very easy to adjust - for both tall and short people. The load distribution is comfortable and the shoulder pad is more comfortable than it looks.
One point of criticism:
The padding sits very firmly on the strap. When you swivel the bag, it moves with you - from shoulder to chest or back. I would have liked a little more flexibility here.
What I would also have liked - similar to the Louis or the Little William - is a zippered pocket on the back.
I find such compartments extremely practical in everyday life, especially for flat items such as a passport, smartphone or boarding pass. It's not a deal-breaker, but it's a detail that would have made the bag even more functional in my opinion.
I deliberately don't miss a carrying handle at the top.
For purely aesthetic reasons, I think it's good that there isn't one. It makes the bag look particularly elegant - in fact, it's the first larger photo bag where I expressly welcome the lack of a handle.
Incidentally, I don't really miss a trolley strap here. Personally, I wouldn't carry this bag on a trolley case anyway - it's too elegant for me and, to be honest, it would look a bit lost there.
I hardly ever use the trolley strap on my Billingham Small Pro either. The situation is similar with detachable straps: I don't mind their absence at all on a bag of this size. On the contrary - the permanently integrated carrying system emphasizes the clear, minimalist character of the Signature Bag L.
For me, this is a deliberate design decision that fits well with the positioning of the bag.
The four metal feet at the bottom of the bag are also a very nice detail.
They not only ensure a secure stand, but also protect the high-quality leather on the underside when the bag is placed on the floor, on stone or on other rougher surfaces.
Such details may seem inconspicuous at first glance, but they make a real difference in everyday life.
Interior & packing examples
"Large" is of course relative - but from the point of view of a Leica M photographer, the description fits.
For SL users, it would be more compact.
With its 5 liters of internal volume, the Signature Bag L offers a surprising amount of space without appearing bulky. Even when fully packed, it retains its slim shape.
Examples from practice:
Two freely positionable dividers ensure flexibility.
The inner compartments are also practical:
Compared to Louis or Little William, there are no outer side pockets. The Signature series is more stable and boxy - additional side compartments would make little sense here in terms of design.
A nice detail are the four metal feet on the base, which protect the leather when it is put down.
What has become increasingly clear in the course of use: The Signature Bag L is a bag designed for structure and order.
Thanks to its overall very stable construction, it is particularly suitable for photographers who pack their equipment in a conscious and organized manner - and want to keep it that way on the go.
Those who tend to spontaneously overload bags or "bulge" them out will quickly reach their limits here. If, on the other hand, you value the fact that every item has its fixed place and stays there, you will benefit significantly from this rigidity in everyday life.
For me, this is a real advantage, especially outdoors: the bag doesn't change its shape, the equipment doesn't slip and you can reach for the right item more quickly and efficiently when you're out and about.
The Signature Bag L is therefore not so much a bag for maximum volume, but rather one for controlled use, clear organization and quiet working.
Leather bags and everyday life - a classic area of tension.
Of course, the Signature Bag L is not as weatherproof as bags made from FibreNyte or nylon canvas, such as those from Wotancraft. However, this is not a shortcoming, but a deliberate choice of material.
I like variety - even with photo bags.
There is a suitable bag for the beach, mountains, rain or city walks. Leather requires more care or protection, but rewards you with a tactile feel, elegance and patina.
I often simply feel better dressed with a leather bag.
For me, suitability for everyday use and high-quality design are not mutually exclusive - on the contrary: the new lid design has made the Signature Bag L even more suitable for everyday use without losing any of its elegance.
A little bonus from everyday life:
My teenage daughter recently said:
"Of all your bags, I like this one the best."
If that's not an award 😉
For whom is the Signature Bag L suitable - and for whom not?
The Signature Bag L is primarily aimed at photographers who consciously select their equipment, pack it in a structured way and appreciate clear organization on the go. Anyone who works with a Leica M system or similarly compact mirrorless cameras and values dimensional stability, feel and elegant design will find a very harmonious solution here.
The bag is less suitable for users who like to spontaneously "overload" their photo bag, expect a lot of volume flexibility or regularly transport larger setups such as SL cameras with heavy zooms. Those who are primarily looking for a weatherproof, purely functional outdoor bag will also be better served by other concepts.
Conclusion
I'll be blunt:
The Oberwerth Signature Bag L is very expensive. Period.
I wouldn 't be able to afford this bag out of my own pocket at the moment - and I think that's fair to say. The price requires a conscious decision and is not something you can "just pick up". It is high, even in the context of high-quality photo bags.
At the same time, I understand everyone who does exactly that.
Sometimes you don't save up for lots of things, but for one very specific thing. Something you want to use for a long time. Something that accompanies you every day. Something that gives you pleasure - not because it is necessary, but because it is special.
The Signature Bag L is just such a product.
It is not a rational purchase. It is a reward. For yourself, for your own passion, for many years of photography - or simply for the desire for something really good.
You don't have to talk yourself into it.
You don't have to afford it either.
But you can recognize it for what it is: an exceptionally well-made bag that focuses uncompromisingly on quality, craftsmanship and design.
And sometimes that's enough.
